Since our last blog post, Farmageddon has made a great amount of progress and we are finally in the end-stages of this project. Following the introduction of cauliflower and lettuce into our plots, all of our crops are established and we can shift our focus to harvesting. In the final week of October , we were graced with big harvests of summer squash from our row of Three Sisters! This was super exciting as it was our first real harvest consisting of 15 squashes and 1 cucumber. Many of our classmates experienced issues with pests like melon worms eating their crops, but we luckily escaped with only two squash impacted. We began the new month of November  with a lot of slow developments in the garden. After our very bountiful squash harvests, we realized we had to do some editing to our Three Sisters system. All of our corn bolted early while they were still short, not giving the beans an adequate trellis to climb on. In the month’s first week we built extra trellising for our bean...

Hello!   We have an amazing update this week with all of our plants thriving after these 2 hurricanes! Introducing our vibrant Purple Romanesco cauliflower, one of the most visually stunning vegetables you can grow! We’ve planted these beauties in our paper mulch, and we can’t wait to watch them thrive. What makes this cauliflower truly remarkable is not just its striking purple hue, but also the mesmerizing Fibonacci pattern it forms as it develops. Our first sign of growth! Take a look at this gorgeous squash thriving as part of our Three Sisters garden! It’s doing exceptionally well, and we couldn’t be more excited. Our corn, too, is exceeding our expectations and has grown much taller than we initially anticipated based on our transplants. It’s a wonderful reminder of the beauty and surprises of gardening! Stay tuned for more updates as our garden continues to flourish! Here's a fantastic close-up shot captured by Nick, showcasing our thriving carrots! Grown using conve...

Hi guys! Here is an update on how our farm is going! Here is a landscape view of our section of the farm! Our three sisters' crop is doing pretty well, as we have laid a bunch of more hay and compost to help suffocate the weeds. This was after Hurricane Helene, and there was very minimal damage to our farm.  Here is a closeup of our strawberries after we layed down some hay to also combat the weeds. At first these crops were not looking their best but now that the weather has cooled a little bit they are starting to flourish! To maintain these, we tend the dead leaves and snip them off so the energy can increase to growing the plant.  Here is a sad update on the candy corn crop. It seems the weather was too hot for these little plants to handle and one of our members, Mark, took them home to see if he could save them! Not every plant will flourish to our liking but at least we received some knowledge on this new crop we experimented on. We are also glad that we put them in the...

Exciting News: Our Candy Corn Crop is Planted! We’re super excited to share that we’ve just planted our candy corn crop! This fun addition will definitely add some creativity to our fall farm. Since we won’t be able to plant pumpkins during our time here, Mark came up with the awesome idea of growing candy corn instead. We filled two-gallon containers with compost, pyrite, and soil to give our plants the best start. We’re placing these pots right into the ground, so when December hits, Mark can easily pull them out and take them home. We have four candy corn plants growing alongside our cucumbers, adding a whimsical touch to our farm. Here’s Reagan planting our cucumbers on the trellis! We’re putting these next to the tomatoes and in between the candy corn. We’re using two different kinds of cucumbers, some are transplants and some are from seed. It'll be interesting to see how they both grow! We also plan to add our purple basil and marigolds in this area since they’ll help each o...

9/11 Hello everyone! W e are excited to share that we are now into our second week on the farm, and began planting last week. The first row we worked on is our "Three Sisters" system involving corn, squash, and beans. We began by spacing and planting our corn transplants, followed by direct seeding beans and squash along a repeated pattern. The traditional intercropping technique "Three Sisters" plants these three crops close together to support each other's growth. As shown in the photo above, we designed our layout with corn planted in a zigzag pattern, strategically positioned beans between the corn stalks to climb up them, and squash planted in the middle to provide shade for the beans. 9/16 This week our focus shifted to planting strawberry and tomato transplants, as well as direct seeding beets and carrots. We started the day by planting root crops on our second row. Here, Nick and Shoshana weeded the soil and then used the Jang Push Seeder to lay down th...

We’re excited to kick off a new semester at our incubator farm, where we'll be growing various fall crops! We’ve set some specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound S.M.A.R.T. goals that will help us thrive as we work toward a sustainable farming practice. These will be listed here for all of you to see and be inspired. This season, we are growing a mix of vegetables and flowers that support each other through intercropping. We’re looking forward to growing carrots, beets, cauliflower, marigolds, sunflowers, squash, long beans, corn and many more crops! Each plant plays a role in creating a healthy environment for the others to ensure our goals are met. As we set everything up and start growing our wonderful crops, we will be here to share our journey with you. Join us as we navigate the challenges and successes of farming, and get inspired to start your own garden!  https://youtu.be/5awKJUZpHsY?si=LZIyMBY6sHLFKDeR This video highlights our flowering cucumbers and s...
